The addition of Chess to the Maryborough Masters Games was a success with 28 players including Paul Garbett, an International Chess Master from New Zealand who was holidaying at Hervey Bay.
Paul took out the competition overall and was over 60 years winner with John Harris from Bundaberg 2nd. John is a former Queensland State Chess Champion.
It was a must come tournament for another player, Louis Willemse, who came by helicopter from Bundaberg.
In the junior under 12 years, locals Mitchel Whitaker won in a strong field of 12 with Lachlan Grant second.
In the 12 to 16 years, Patrick Harris (B’berg) was 1st and local Holly Jenkins 2nd.
In the combined 16 to 40 years, Timothy Harris (B’Berg) was 1st, and local Wendy Fraser 2nd.
Local Karl Rochford won the 41 to 60 years which had a field of 8 players with Bundaberg’s Peter Bender 2nd.
The competition was held at the Aldridge School Hall.
